The steps of the work, from an imagined collective to the first real issue.

  1. First year

    Fiori d’Inchiostro

    The starting point: an imaginary collective and a periodical that the website talked about without containing it. A page-by-page critique of that site set the requirements for the new project.

  2. Research

    Zines, magazines and web formats

    From DIY culture to riot grrrl and A24 Zines; then formats native to the web, from scrollytelling to the case studies Ōpĕra, The Pudding, doppiozero, Snow Fall and Are.na. None of them combines a fixed rhythm, multimedia languages, an open call and a design process openly assisted by AI: that is the space Numero Zero occupies.

  3. Design

    The system

    Concept, site architecture, visual identity and a reusable template: the goal is not a single page but the system that makes a new one every three months. The work with AI is documented step by step.

  4. Ongoing

    The exploratory survey

    An anonymous survey of students, artists and people interested in independent magazines, multimedia languages and AI, to understand under which conditions people take part and how they use generative tools.

  5. Coming soon

    The pilot issue

    The system tested with a real community: choosing the theme, the call, an in-person meeting, selection and publication of the first issue.
